November 24, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - Name of the Game Boo Boo Davis kwam naar Nederland om zich weer op de muzikale kaart te laten zetten met Mississippi blues zoals die - volgens de hoestekst van dit album - anno nu zou moeten 'klinken. En dat plan is, mede door Nederlandse inbreng, bijzonder geslaagd. Het is heel aardig om mede-producer en gitarist Jan Mittendorp, die hier en daar op eerdere Black & Tan producties al eens in een ondergeschikte rol zijn partijtje meespeelde, lekker uit zijn bescheiden rol te horen vallen. Samen met drummer John Gerritse is hij verantwoordelijk voor de oerdegelijke, vette grooves. Zonder gebruik te maken van een bas wordt op (bariton)gitaar en speciaal samengestelde drumkit een overtuigende versie van the devil's music neergezet. Het lijkt er in het begin even op dat er een 'vette buidelrat' om de hoek meegluurt maar die kiest al snel het hazenpad als Davis het eerste couplet van het openingsnummer 'Dirty Dog' inzet. Boo Boo kan heerlijk achteroverleunen op die robuuste, superstrakke basis, zijn woorden neerleggen waar hij dat wil en tussendoor nog wat mondharmonicalicks rondstrooien. The beat goes on! Dit is dan ook geen trio dat speciaal voor deze cd is samengesteld, de mannen hebben gezamenlijk de nodige mileage. En dat is the name of the game: samen kilometers vreten en voortdurend gericht blijven op wat in de hoestekst wordt omschreven als; the groove, the feel and the basic thruths found in the blues. November 17, 2008 Just got the confirmation that Doug will be performing at the PORT FAIRY FOLK FESTIVAL in Geelong VIC, Australia on March 6 - 9 , 2009. Boo Boo Davis - Name Of The Game St. Louis-based vocalist/harpist Boo Boo Davis performs here with guitarist (and Black & Tan label owner) Jan Mittendorp and drummer John Gerritse in a trio format that initially was considered "a crazy idea," according to the liner notes, and that originated during the trio's spring 2008 tour. For the most part, these 13 originals deal with familiar themes of love gone bad, loneliness, buzzard luck, and hard times. A few break the mold, such as the droning "Stay From the Casino" and the novelty hip-shaker "Who Stole the Booty." The album's mix of blues, funk, and swampy soul evokes the hypnotic rawness of the earliest Fat Possum albums by Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside, as weil as Hound Dog Taylor and Excello-era Lazy Lester. Without a bass or second guitar to push the grooves, Gerritse's drums and Mittendorp's guitar are way up in the mix, sometimes obscuring Davis' vocals, which sound garbied, especially when he sings through his harmonica mike. It often sounds as if he's singing from somewhere far in the distance, and if this is the intended effect, the recording achieves it successfully, but at the expense of the Iyrics. Davis has been compared to Howlin' Wolf, but the latter's feral rasp and trademark howl never obscured his enunciation, nor did he sound like he was singing from the next room. Mittendorp employs heavy wah-wah, reverb, and distortion on a handful of tunes. Such bombast might be too dissonant for tradition-minded fans, but there's enough bedrock blues with raucous, constricted harp to satisfy lovers of a deep,dark bluessound. This is some cool stuff, really raw and rough. Some interesting production sounds here, with the ambient miking and sometimes the vocals hard to understand or bit buried, like a one-mic club recording. You're not afraid to experiment. And baby sounds too. You're a radical. Thanks for sharing this fun and interesting CD. October 22, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME I have to confess Boo Boo Davis is a new name to me, certainly this is the first CD of his I have heard and i am impressed. Until earlier this year Boo Boo's group had featured a bass player but following a tour they decided to ditch that instrument, become a trio and in my book create a terrific sound. From the start of the CD it is obvious these lads mean business. 'Dirty Dog' is a good pounding number with which to commence proceedings, but there are slow numbers along the way, 'Want Nobody' and 'Why You Wanna Do It' being two such items. Boo Boo's harmonica playing is first rate and I have to say I think the same applies to his very appealing vocal work. As far as i can gather the material is all original and written by Davis and the two band members, John Genitse and Jan Mittendorp. Genitse's drumming is classy and so is Mittendorp's guitar work - check out 'It's A Shame'. C'est de l'énergie ŕ l'état brut pour un blues survolté. Ces mecs ont bouffé du lion et la bęte devait ętre nerveuse. Ils veulent se faire entendre et ils y arrivent. Pourtant, ils ne sont que trois : Boo Boo Davis, chant, harmonica ; Jan Mittendorp, guitare ; John Gerritse, batterie et percussions. Né au cśur du Mississippi, Boo Boo Davis a biberonné du downhome blues dčs son enfance dans les 40's, il sait donc de quoi il retourne. Mais il ne s'enferme pas dans la nostalgie, c'est bien un blues du 21čme sičcle qu'il nous propose, męme si ŕ travers certains morceaux on distingue les ombres d'Howlin' Wolf ou de Jimmy Reed. Le trio joue ŕ un train d'enfer, comme s'il y avait urgence, comme si s'arręter serait fatal. La pression est constante. Ça prend aux tripes. Les sons sont amplifiés ou distordus, mais il y a peu d'effets de style, il semble que ce qui compte soit d'aller droit au but pour faire monter l'adrénaline. Aucun répit pour l'auditeur qui ne peut résister, seulement se laisser envahir sans résister. Ce disque est une véritable force en mouvement. La cohésion des trois musiciens est impeccable et l'harmo et le chant de Boo Boo Davis s'imposent avec ardeur. October 14, 2008 Boo Boo Davis - Name Of The Game “Dreckig” ist nicht unbedingt ein Ausdruck, den man sich in Zusammenhang mit etwas positiven, mit Lob, vorstellt. Im Blues, in urbaner Musik, in Soul und Rhythm and Blues ist das aber deutlich ein Lob. Denn so dreckig wie Boo Boo Davis kam seit langem kein Album mehr daher, zumindest keines, das auf meinem Schreibtisch landete. Erdig, schlammig, verraucht – dreckig eben. Muddy. Jan Mittendorps Gitarre kratzt dabei aufwühlend, zugleich einwummernd und bodenständig über Davis Südstaatenorgan und schubbert genüsslich Boo Boos Mundharmonikaspiel rauf und runter. Das macht Spaß. Im Booklet steht zu lesen: ”This is how Mississippi Blues sounds in 2008“. Dem habe ich nichts als Lob hinzuzufügen. Wir brauchen mehr von solcher Spielfreude. Ein Schlag mitten ins Gesicht. October 13, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME En som ogsĺ har levd bluesen og som i godt voksen alder ser ut til ĺ kunne leve av bluesen, er Boo Boo Davis, oppvokst i Drew, Mississippi, i hjertet av Mississippi-deltaet midtveis mellom Dockery Plantation og Parchman Farm, der Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson og andre udřdelige bluesnavn bĺde lćrte og praktiserte sitt fag. Boo Boo Davis er et ledd i denne tradisjonen, men forlot deltaet og endte i husbandet i en av de mer viderekomne bluesklubbene i East St. Louis, Missouri pĺ en tid da denne byen var i ferd med ĺ fĺ fram navn som Albert King, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry og Little Milton. I dag kalles Boo Boo Davis en survivor fra Mississippis siste store bluesgenerasjon, og han har gitt ut flere kritikerroste plater. For tiden er han knyttet til hollandske Black & Tan Records som nylig har gitt ut "Name Of The Game", med Boo Boo som sanger og kraftfull munnspiller og med hollenderne Jan Mittendorp pĺ gitar og Jan Gerritse pĺ trommer og perkusjon. Albumet er modernisert funky deltablues, med en anelse Hill Country-blues i sine basslřse arrangement med dundrende tromming. Mittendorps gitarspill bruker rikelig med wah-wah, uten at det virker som utvendig effektmakeri. Det er sjelfullt og det fremhever den mektige rřsten til Davis. Ĺpningssporet "Dirty Dog" gĺr i vinner-riffene bĺde fra "Nutbush City Limits" og Bobby Rush' bluesfunk fra "Chicken Heads". Den sensuelle og tunge "I'm Comin' Home" kan minne om Junior Kimbrough, men etter ĺ ha kjřrt gjennom alle tretten lĺtene, sĺ er likhetspunktene med flere andre artister, det vćre seg Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley eller Sonny Boy Williamson, bare en bekreftelse pĺ at dette er en artist som har absorbert hele den klassiske Delta-Chicago-bluesen og tilfřyd sin personlige touch. Alle lĺtene er signert Davis og/eller i samarbeid med Gerritse og Mittendorp, og trioen er samspilt som en eneste stor bankende bluespuls. I november er de ventet til Norge. Oyvind Pharo October 11, 2008 review in the new November 2008 issue of DOWN BEAT: Doug MacLeod - The Utrecht Sessions In a Dutch studio, sinqer and guitarist MacLeod came up with sormething rare: an exceptional acoustic blues album full of original songs characterized by a combination of immediacy and intelligence. (He's solo on several tracks, joined by a near-invisible percussionist and string bass player on the rest.) Understanding the importance of restraint to the blues, he skirts the predictable with fresh imagery in Iyrics fresh and his music barb-wire sharp. It took guts to write and perform "The Demon's Moan" about the predatory evil he encountered as a young innocent. Frank-John Hadley October 9, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME Avec son précédent album, Boo Boo Davis avait sauté tęte premičre dans le monde de l’électro, pour mettre en avant goűt cette union subtile avec le Blues. Et déjŕ « Drew Mississippi » groovait ŕ point nommé, rejoignant la démarche artistique de Son of Dave. Alors que le travail de programmation de Ramon Goose était la signature fondamentale du précédent album, sur « Name of The Game » les talents du programmateur sont isolés de ce dernier projet. Nous retrouvons le rythme entętant des boucles musicales, mais c’est ici aussi un retour ŕ un Blues plus authentique, essentiellement dű ŕ l’authenticité des instruments plus conventionnels (guitare et batterie). Boo Boo Davis, Jan Mittendorp et John Gerritse forment un super trio, oů chaque son évoque, le Blues profond. Le côté plaintif de l’harmonica et le chant de la pédale wah-wah [1] hypnotique et rugissant, sont sans conteste des allégories au Swamp Blues. Un style ébranlé par les synthčses obsédantes du rythme imparable de la batterie, et celui effréné des chorus de guitares en pleine transe. Une ambiance digne de celles des marécages poisseux du Mississippi que l’on retrouve sur « Whole Stole The Booty » (texte écrit par Ramon Goose), « Dirty Dog » et « Stay From The Casino ». Mais « Name of The Game » c’est un album homogčne qui est parfois plus conventionnel avec des titres tels que : « It’s a shame », « St Louis Woman », « Tryin’ To Get Ahead » ou plus traditionnel avec « Lonely All By Myself », « I’m Comin’ Home ». La recette fonctionne et nous sommes certainement en possession d’un des albums les plus intéressants de Boo Boo Davis. -------------------------------------------------------- BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME Was het vorige album, Drew, Mississippi nog vernoemd naar zijn geboorteplaats, op Name Of The Game bezingt Boo Boo Davis in St. Louis Woman de stad waar hij achttien jaar lang samen met zijn broer de meest uiteenlopende bluesacts begeleidde. Destijds zat hij achter de drumkit. Sinds jaar en dag doet hij het echter nu alweer met mondharmonica en stem. En vooral die laatste is niet mis zoals we inmiddels weten. Sinds vorig jaar getoerd te hebben zonder bassist, aanvankelijk een experiment, is dit vijfde album enkel met begeleiding van gitaar (platenbaas Jan Mittendorp) en drums (John Gerritse, o.a. ex-Marcel Scherpenzeel Band) tot stand gekomen. Door de donkere sound en het gebruik van een bariton gitaar wordt die niet gemist. Met veel enthousiasme grijpt Boo Boo terug naar zijn natuurlijke muzikale achtergrond. Van het tranceverwekkende, repeterende Stay From The Casino waarin de hartslag van de noordelijke Mississippi heuvels doorklinkt tot I'm Coming Home, onvervalste Chicagoblues in de beste traditie van Muddy Waters en Howlin' Wolf. Maar nergens blijft deze natuurkracht in een trucje hangen. Dit is blues zoals het hoort te klinken: basaal, gepassioneerd en rauw tot op het bot. Boo Boo Davis slaagt wederom met vlag en wimpel.       Marcel Haerkens October 8, 2008 Every Monday night, musical history is made as the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour at the Kentucky Theatre begins. A worldwide multi-media celebration of grassroots, Americana music. The internationally syndicated show is recorded before a live-audience, and broad casted on over 480 radio & tv stations (including XM Radio); far over one million listeners. Last Monday (October 6) Doug MacLeod was invited to the show and did a great performance. "You made me cry!" is what Sonya Kitchell (his colleage on the show) told Doug after his performance. Davis hat seinen eigenen, unverkennbaren Juke-Joint-Sound geschaffen und zeigt sich auch auf seinem fünften Album für das Black & Tan Label in starker Verfassung. Im Gegensatz zur etwas experimentellen Vorgänger-CD mit HipHop-Elementen gilt diesmal; Weniger ist mehr. Der Sänger und Mundharmonikaspieler verzichtet auf jegliche Studiotüfteleien. Stattdessen wird er wie auf seiner letzten Europatournee lediglich von Schlagzeug und einer Gitarre (d. h. keinem Bass) begleitet. So kommt sein Blues im ‚Ohne Overdubs'-Verfahren unvermittelt und besonders mitreißend rüber. Die fetten, schweren Grooves von ‚I'm Comin' Home' oder ‚I'm So Tired' verleihen diesen wie auch anderen Songs eine gewisse Bedrohlichkeit, die durch Davis' ruppige Gesangsart noch verstärkt wird. Bei ‚Stay From The Casino' wird es funkig, ‚Tryin' To Get Ahead' liefert eine einfache Botschaft, die zum Nachdenken anregt, und mit einer Neueinspielung von ‚Who Stole The Booty' entwickelt Davis eines der besten Stücke seiner letzten CD weiter. Da es mit so viel Leidenschaft und Wucht eingespielt wurde, ist das aktuelle Album trotz seines traditionelleren Anasatzes genauso mutig. Nichts für schwache Nerven, aber fast ein Muss für Liebhaber des unverwässerten Mississippi-Blues. October 3, 2008 Boo Boo Davis is a true Delta bluesman and one of the last of his generation. A poor childhood meant he couldn't learn to read or write not that has not kept him down. His latest album for Dutch based Black & Tan opens with Dirty Dog which is, as you would expect from the title, a grungy blues. The pounding beat from drummer John Gerritse is a sign of things to come. I'm Coming Home is even more grungy than the opener. It's done in a John Lee Hooker style with a fuzzed vocal and added harp from Davis. This highlights how powerful Boo Boo is as a singer. There is some good advice on Stay Away From The Casino and he starts to funk things up a little with some pace also injected. However, the repetition made me take a little time to warm to it. Want Nobody Tell Me How To Live My Life is a more straightforward harmonica and guitar blues and Boo Boo finds a groove on Tryin To Get Ahead. The Chicago blues of the eponymous title track has a prominent harmonica and a beefy vocal. Who Stole The Booty is a contemporary blues with overcharged guitar and harp. Believe me, this riff will work its way right into your brain. Why You Wanna Do It is more of a soft rock song and although slightly out of kilter with the rest of the album, it does have a very good vocal. Lonely All By Myself is a slow Chicago blues and more than meets the standard with its deep pulsating bass line, even though he doesn't use a bass player! It's A Shame is an upbeat blues with harp to the fore. I just love the energy! Throbbing drums herald I'm So Tired and when the world weary guitar and spoken intro join in then we have a song on our hands. It's conducted at walking pace throughout and Davis produces one of his best vocals. Hot Foot is a funky grinder and he closes with St Louis Woman, loosely played in the St Louis style. He seems to like the fuzz effect on his vocal and he could be accused of using it too much. Nevertheless, this is a great finish to a top class album. September 29, 2008 review Boo Boo Davis at BLUESMAN.NL Ken je dat gevoel? Je komt thuis van je werk. Een dag vol gezanik en andere onbenulligheden. Je ploft op de bank. Je drukt een cd'tje in de speler. Je zucht eens diep en na het aanhoren van de eerste klanken overkomt het je. Je krijgt het warm. Je krijgt iets euforisch. Je wordt wat opgefokt. Krijgt schijt aan de hele wereld en de behoefte naar een Zware Van Nelle en een groot glas Jack Daniels wordt in een keer heel erg groot. (zonder ijs, welteverstaan!). Dit overkwam mij na de eerste gitaartonen van Jan Mittendorp, die op een schraperige en doordringende manier van gitaarspelen de cd 'In The Name Of The Game' van Boo Boo Davis opent. In oktober 2007 heb ik het gezelschap een akoestisch optreden zien verzorgen in het Drentse cafe De Amer in Amen en na de voorjaarstour in 2008 is besloten om als trio Davis, Mittendorp, Gerritse het album 'In The Name Of The Game' op te nemen. Dus, zonder bassist Nico Heijligers, die in 2007 nog als vierde man fungeerde. Drummer John Gerritse verbouwde zijn 60 jaar oude drumkit met een 28 inch bass drum en gitarist Jan Mittendorp schafte zichzelf een baritongitaar aan en knoopte er hele zware snaren op en het groovende basgeluid was een feit. Met de wetenschap dat er geen bassist aanwezig is, ga je uiteraard letten op het gemis ervan. Nou, niet dus! In the name of the game is zo puur, zo rauw en zoals op de hoes al is verwoord: ...... this is how Mississippi blues sounds in 2008! Luister naar openingstrack 'Dirty Dog' en je bent helemaal verkocht! Het totaalgeluid van de cd ademt iets mysterisch uit. Een pakkend meeslepend voodoo-sfeertje en dit alles verhuld in vette, dampende en ruige bluesklanken met perfect drumwerk van John Gerritse en subliem gitaarwerk van Boo Boo's vriend Jan Mittendorp. Tekstueel wordt je van Boo Boo niet veel wijzer, maar dat is ook niet zo verwonderlijk, want tanden heeft de goedlachse bluesman al lang niet meer. Gelukkig zeggen titels als 'Lonely All By Myself' en 'I'm So Tired' voldoende over de bluesfeel van Boo Boo. Bovendien zijn de teksten op dit album voor mij persoonlijk allemaal bijzaak. Het is de drive, de power, het smerige en het ruige op 'In The Name Of The Game' dat van dit album een fantastisch meesterwerk maakt. CD van 2008? It has entered the charts six weeks ago and this week the record went up from #31 to #14. These charts are composed based on the play lists of more than 400 authorized terrestrial & internet radio stations, from all over the world, reporting to the data base of Roots Music Report. September 25, 2008 Review in the new issue of SOUL BAG (France) from the Billy Jones concert at COGNAC BLUES PASSIONS in July 2008: Billy Jones fit montre d'un grand charisma, au service de son blues marqué par la soul et le funk, et surtout ŕ l'écriture inspirée. Son trio de sideman fait dans le musclé, mais la complicité rčgne et les morceaux originaux s'enchainent, y compris les plus sombres (Crystal). Capable d'un beau jeu cinglant ŕ la guitare, dommage que Jones s'égare parfois dans une surcharge de distortion qu'il semble ne pas maitriser. En tout cas, il a un sacré sens du spectacle; il dégaine des gadgets géants pour mettre en situation ses dires (téléphone, peigne..) transpire le funk en entonnant Fire des Ohio Players, accentue la dose ŕ la talk box. Et quand le clavier s'y met aussi, sa donne des pures passages chitlin' circuit ŕ l'engouement irrčstible. ---------------------------------------------- review in CRI DU COYOTE nr 107 (France): BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME On aurait Presque pu créer le label Bath Tub Blues, pour ces Delta boys qui enregistrent avec leur baignoire pour réverb'. Fat Possum nous en livre souvent, Black & Tan s'y met ici avec Boo Boo Davis. Le défi annoncé était la suppression du bassiste ŕ l'issue d'une tournée. Davis (chant et harm) est donc en compagnie seulement de deux compčres : Jan Mittendorp (patron du label qui paie souvent de sa personne, peut-ętre pour pouvoir mener ses projets ŕ bien, sans aucun doute aussi par plaisir de jouer !) ŕ la guitare et John Ginitri aux drums/ percus. September 19, 2008 Mit seinem mittlerweile fünften Album hat Boo Boo Davis, nach Drew Mississippi wieder einmal etwas besonderes zu bieten. Nach der Verquickung von Blues und Scratching sowie Sampling, wurde die neue CD im Trio eingespielt. Allerdings nicht in der traditionellen Besetzung, sondern ohne einen Bassisten. Was während der Frühjahrstour des Jahres 2008 zunächst als verrückte Idee in die Tat umgesetzt wurde und beim Publikum sehr gut ankam, schlägt sich nun auf "Name Of The Game" nieder. Für die Aufnahmen packte Jan Mittendorp die Bariton-Gitarre aus.Ob man es glaubt oder nicht, ein Bassist wird nicht vermisst. So wird aus einer abgetörnten Idee Realität und die dreizehn Stück kommen aus einem Aufguss. Klasse, was man im Trio oder Duo an Songs geschrieben hat, wobei man sich den Luxus erlauben kann, "Who Stole My Booty" nochmals neu einzuspielen. Diesen Track gab es bereits auf dem Vorgänger. Davis, einer Musiker und Sänger, der aus dem Delta stammt, knüpft abermals einen herrlichen Blues-Teppich mit seiner Harp, die er verdammt oft zum Einsatz bringt. Fast könnte man sagen, "The Name Of The Game" sei ein Harp-Album, wenn, ja wenn da nicht ein Mittendorp mit seinen Gitarren auf Wanderschaft geht. Er serviert so herrlich unterschiedliche und in ihrer Differenzierung variierende Sounds, die selbstredend für Abwechslung sorgen und damit Hörspaß pur bieten. Ein Stück wie "I'm Comin Home" könnte glatt aus dem Song-Reservoir eines Muddy Waters stammen. Davis hat eh schon eine markante Stimme und verpasst ihr durch den öfteren Gebrauch des Harp-Mikrofons zum Singen einen verfremdeten Charakter. Einerseits ist die CD ein Groove-Meister vor dem Herrn, anderseits ist sie von einem billanten Chicago-Rhythmus geprägt. Natürlich groovt der Windy City-Blues auch, allerdings haben die Kompositionen so etwas von der Eigenart zweier Mannschaften beim Tauziehen. Mal liegt der Vorteil bei der einen, mal bei der anderen Mannschaft und wenn schon ein solches Vergleichsbeispiel, dann gibt es nach 50 Minuten keinen Sieger. Oder doch, denn der 12-Takter ist bei dem Spiel des Trios eindeutig der Gewinner. Dass man "Who Stole My Booty" abermals ins Spiel gebracht hat, ist durchaus nachvollziehbar, denn der Song ist schon klasse und Mittendorp bringt von Psycho-Blues über Wah Wah-Antrieb und wenn ich mich nicht verhört habe, auch Slide-Gitarre ins Geschehen ein. Das alles in einem Stück... Respekt! Vom Mittelmaß einer Produktion wie "The Name Of The Game" ist man um Meilen entfernt. Auch klanglich hat man die Spielsteine auf dem Brett genau in eine ideale Richtung bewegt, oder, anders ausgedrückt: Eine Serie von Sechsen zeigte er Würfel an. Bei der Produktion ist Eric Spanijers zum Trio gestoßen und der ist auch allein verantwortlich für Mixing und Recording. Eine etwas andere Nummer ist "It's A Shame", weil hier der niederländische Gitarrist eine tolle retro-anmutende Gitarre nach Art der 50er-Jahre spielt. Mit "Hot Foot" gibt es ein herzhaftes Funk-Stück auf die Ohren. Tiefer gelegte Wah Wah-Gitarre satt und funky Links sind die prägenden Merkmale dieser zweieinhalb Minuten und direkt danach begibt man sich abschließend wieder auf den mehrspurigen Highway des Groove: "St. Louis Woman". "Dirty Dog" ist eine Spieleröffnung nach Maß und versetzt den Hörer in eine ausgezeichnete Position, um sich den folgenden zwölf Tracks zu widmen. Mit diesem frisch dargebotenen Album hängen die drei Akteure eindeutig am Tropf der Aktualität des Blues-Genres und der Protagonist sollte durch dieses Album den Radius seines Fan-Kreises um eine ordentliche Größenordnung erweitern. "I'm So Tired" ist eine Midtempo-Blues-Perle mit hypnotischem Outfit. Stoische Drums und eine repetative Gitarren-Linie, die Mittendorp punktuell nur ein klein wenig ausschmückt. Womit imitiert Davis bloß dieses Baby-Geschrei? Klingt nach einer Kazoo. Schade ist, dass man im fein gestalteten Booklet darauf verzichtet hat, die Texte abzudrucken. Die kurze Davis-Biografie ist mit »This is how Mississippi Blues Sounds in 2008« überschrieben. Treffender kann man den Inhalt des Albums in einem Satz nicht zusammen fassen. Mit "Lonely All By Myself" hat man die ultimative Ballade am Start und diese glänzt durch einen perfekten Gerritse-Rhythmusteppich. Der Drummer hat schon mit Memo Gonzalez sowie Popa Chubby gespielt und war Mitgründer der Marcel Scherpenzeel Band. Dort bediente er das Schlagzeug bis zum Jahr 2004. Wieder hat ein Black & Tan-Künstler voll überzeugt und wenn man die bereits zitierte Lebenslauf-Überschrift zu Grunde legt, hat "The Name Of The Game" auch Auswirkungen über das Jahr 2008 hinaus.Folglich sind 8,5 von 10 RockTimes-Uhren für dieses Vorzeigealbum nicht untertrieben ------------------------------------------------ Boo Boo Davis - Name Of The Game Een Deltacommissie van zogenaamd wijze mannen en vrouwen wil de Hollandse Delta redden door het opspuiten van de kust en verhogen van het waterpeil van het IJsselmeer. Boo Boo komt uit de Mississippi Delta, en daar zijn ze wel erger gewend. Zijn imposante stem- en harmonicageluid op Name Of The Game zal iedere springvloed, tsunami of orkaan op zijn of haar schreden doen terugkeren. Kom bij Boo Boo niet aan met gepolijste stijlfiguurtjes. Rauw en ruig moet het zijn. Zoals Howlin’ Wolf in zijn beste dagen. Of zoals veel Fat Possum-acts. Dat vinden ook Boo Boo’s begeleiders: drummer John Gerritse en gitarist Jan Mittendorp. Een bas is niet nodig; Mittendorp schafte een bariton gitaar aan en monteerde wat zwaardere snaren op zijn gewone gitaar. Geregeld diep intrappen van het wah-wahpedaal en wat vervorming op Boo Boo’s mike doen de rest. Vijftig minuten deltablues die gegarandeerd climate proof is. Burnside oder der Jelly Rolll Kings. Mit Unterstützung van Black & Tan - Labelboss Jan Mittendorps verzerrter Gitarre und John Gerritses treibendem Schlagzeug singt sich Davis im Trio durch 13 Eigenkompositionen (geschrieben "with a little help from his band") und bläst eine nicht unbedingt sehr versierte, aber immer genau zur Sache kommende Mundharmonika. Maar op 4 November 1943 werd daar James 'Boo Boo' Davis geboren, als zoon van een katoenplukker. Net als Charlie Patton, die een dorpje verderop woonde, in de dertiger jaren al de blues speelde, leerde Boo Boo al op jonge leeftijd al de blues te spelen op een ijzeren drum. Ja, drummer wilde hij worden. Rammen op trommels en het publiek gek maken, dat wilde hij. Geld voor een echt drumstel was er niet, maar de family band was erg populair in de buurt. Toen de familie verhuisde naar St Louis werd de band de backup begeleidingsgroep voor Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James en Little Milton. Dit waren toen de blueslegenden, als je hen mocht begeleiden moest je wel wat kunnen. Hij startte zijn carričre dus als drummer en schakelde pas laat over naar zang en mondharmonica. Die rol verschafte hem direct al veel meer kans om uitgebreid rond te reizen in het internationale bluescircuit als solist. In Europa kiest hij veelvuldig voor de Nederlandse begeleidingsgroep rond gitarist Jan Mittendorp, die we ook nu aantreffen op zijn nieuwste album, "Name of The Game", sinds 1999 zijn vijfde release voor het Nederlandse Black & Tan label. Davis is de 'real deal' als het op traditionele, authentieke blues aankomt en reist hij dan ook sinds dat jaar onder eigen naam met succes rond in het internationale bluescircuit. Op zijn laatste albums "The Snake" en "Drew, Mississippi", die bijzonder goede recensies kregen, laat hij zich van zijn beste kant horen met lekkere Mississippi- blues. En op zijn nieuwste album is dit niet anders, want ook hier brengt Boo Boo vooral de onvervalste Mississippi-blues ... how it sounds in 2008. Al wijkt hij deze keer een beetje af van het concept van zijn vorige albums. In het begin van dit jaar trok Davis, samen met medeoprichter van de Marcel Scherpenzeel Band, drummer John Gerritse en zijn buddy Mittendorp door de Lage Landen, en meteen kwam het plan om deze kale blues ook op plaat te zetten. Dus hier geen bassist maar enkel drum, gitaar en voornamelijk Boo Boo’s stem en harmonica vormen hier een buitengewoon geheel, een plaat waarop Davis weer gewoon doet waar hij goed in is. Iedereen die zijn voorgangers in huis heeft, weet wat hiermee wordt bedoeld. Ook "Name of The Game" staat weer vol met opwindende en buitengewoon rauwe blues. Blues die zowel invloeden als de Noordelijke Chicago blues als de Zuidelijke Memphis-blues weet te verwerken en hier een flinke dosis swing aan toevoegt. De productie is doeltreffend, de rauwe strot van Davis en het gitaarspel van Jan Mittendorp zijn wederom indrukwekkend. Alle dertien songs worden op even intense en imponerende wijze vertolkt. Op "Name of The Game" grijpt Boo Boo meer terug naar de roots van de blues en de meeste songs klinken dan ook vertrouwd in het oor alhoewel je nergens kan spreken van plagiaat. Geopend wordt er met het sublieme "Dirty Dog", een meeslepende song die zich dadelijk nestelt onder je hersenpan en daar blijft sluimeren. Het ingetogen "Lonely All By Myself", hoeft misschien niet meer uitleg, toch is het een klasse blues die voldoende inhoud heeft om volop van te genieten. Andere tracks als "I'm Comin Home" is dan weer doordrenkt met het geluid van Howlin' Wolf en benadert hij vocaal de klassieke Chess-sound. Buitenbeetje op deze CD is zonder twijfel "Who Stole The Booty", een song die zo klinkt dat je volledig in trance raakt. Meestal hebben de songs swingende arrangementen, maar soul vinden we ook terug in "Why You Wanna Do It", wellicht samen met "Who Stole The Booty" de beste songs op deze nieuwe CD, waarvan ik gerust durf te stellen dat 'Boo Boo' Davis nog meer bewijst een alround artiest te zijn die als geen ander weet hoe een song te schrijven. 'Boo Boo' Davis mag gerust vernoemd worden met al die andere groten uit de blueswereld. "Name of The Game" is door zijn virtuositeit en avontuurlijkheid gewoon een heerlijke hap, hier en daar al uitgeroepen tot de bluesplaat van 2008. Het zou me niets verbazen als deze conclusie in december nog fier overeind staat. A hatvanas évek elején északra, St Louis-ba költözött testvéreivel, és ott élte meg a St Louis-i zenei élet aranykorát. 1972-to"l a testvéreivel létrehozott The Davis Brothers Band-del tizennyolc éven keresztül St Louis keleti részén található Tabby’s Red Room házi bandája voltak. John egy nagyszeru" dobszerkót hozott létre (100% Radio King valódi dobbo"rrel) a 60 évesnél is ido"sebb 28 hüvelykes nagydobjából, Jan pedig egy bariton gitárt vásárolt és nagyon ero"s húrokat tett rá. Ezek voltak a hozzávalók, mellyel az autentikus hangzást létrehozták. A hangzást az új lemezre is sikerült átmenteni. A CD-n található tizenhárom dalt hallgatva, egy pillanatig sem volt hiányérzetem további hangszerek iránt. Nincs mese, Boo Boo Davis munkásságát ismerve, ez eddigi legjobb albuma. Het gerucht gaat dat Drew, ergens rond 1920, de thuisbasis geweest moet zijn van ondermeer blues legendes als Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson en Willie Brown. Daar op de Webb Jennings plantage knutselde en jatte het drietal muzikale ideeën van hun toenmalige idolen. Niets mis mee want vooral Patton’s meest bekende liedje “Pony Blues” dwingt nog steeds veel respect af in het actieve bluescircuit. In datzelfde geeuwende plaatsje Drew zag, om precies te zijn op 4 November 1943, ene Boo Boo Davis het levenslicht. Davis volgt de geest in zijn dromen, die hijzelf “Dave” noemt. Deze pensioengerechtigde bluesman kent de klappen van de zweep en overleeft en beleeft het moderne blues wereldje van dag tot dag. Gek genoeg lijkt hij de herfst van zijn carričre voornamelijk door te brengen in de EU. Sterker nog, zijn laatste vier albums werden voor een groot deel met Nederlandse muzikanten en producenten opgenomen. De namen van o.a. Roel en Erik Spanjers respectievelijk op toetsen en drums, Jasper Mortier (Boyd Small) en Jan Mittendorp op gitaar duiken regelmatig op.Het ontstaan van Boo Boo Davis nieuwe album ‘Name Of The Game’ is een gevolg van een samenwerkingsverband dat plaatsvond in het voorjaar van 2008. Samen met Mittendorp en medeoprichter van de Marcel Scherpenzeel Band, drummer John Gerritse trok het trio door ons land. De kale rake blues rock werd door het publiek zeer gewaardeerd en zetelt nu uitermate geruststellend op ‘Name Of The Game’. De dertien tracks zijn stuk voor stuk juweeltjes die aantonen dat de blues absoluut “alive and kicking” is. Zeker het aan blues trance snuffelende ‘Who Stole The Booty’ en het daarop volgende zeer fraai soulvol uitgevoerde ‘Why You Wanna Do It’ trekken de aandacht. Otis Taylor fans zullen gniffelen van genot. Hoewel men de basgitaar achterwegen heeft gelaten hoor je hem toch. Davis legt dit uit in de inlay “John created a great drum kit (100% Radio King with real skin heads) around his 60+ years old 28 inch bass drum and Jan Mittendorp bought a baritone guitar and put very heavy strings on his regular guitar.” Heb er niet zoveel verstand van, maar als dan ‘I’m So Tired’ en ‘Hot Foot’ komen langs marcheren valt het kwartje. Dit alles maakt ‘Name Of The Game’ tot een buitengewoon futuristische lekker swingende bluesplaat die iets toevoegt aan het oer oude genre. Wat deze nuchtere Hollander betreft, verdient Boo Boo Davis, naast “The Father of Delta Blues”, Patton, Johnson en Brown natuurlijk, nu al een Mississippi Blues Marker. Hopelijk krijgen ze dat ook in Amerika tussen de oren. From BOBTJE'S BLUES PAGES): BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAMES “This is how Mississippi blues sounds in 2008”. Dat staat te lezen in het informatieboekje van Boo Boo Davis’ meest recente cd “Name Of The Game”. Wat startte als een gek idee kwam werkelijkheid na een tour met Boo Boo in 2007. Geen bassist, maar gewoon Boo Boo’s stem en harmonica, het accurate drumwerk van John Gerritse en de nimmer aflatende gitaarlijnen van Boo Boo’s buddy Jan Mittendorp. Het resultaat is gewoon verbluffend goed. Vuil, ranzig, en vettig… dit zijn maar enkele woorden die je het best kan omschrijven aan dit kleinood. Blues in al zijn essentie, blues in al zijn eenvoud. Neem nu ‘Dirty Dog’, een song die je door zijn meeslepend karakter meteen bij de ballen grijpt. ‘I'm Comin Home’ is dan weer een typisch Chicago-blues nummer. Denk aan Chester Burnett alias Howlin’ Wolf en je snapt wat ik bedoel. Trouwens Boo Boo benadert het huilen en grommen van Chester beangstigend dicht. Dat ook pijn en verdriet Boo Boo niet vreemd zijn, kan je dan weer horen in het trage ‘Lonely All by Myself’. De titel alleen al spreekt boekdelen. Sommige van de nummers kun je niet echt onder de klassieke blues catalogeren. Neem bijvoorbeeld, het opzwepende ‘Who Stole the Booty’. Dit nummer heeft iets hypnotisch over zich, zeg maar een soort van Voodoo-sound, waardoor je (zeker als je een paar glazen op hebt) al vlug in trance kan komen. Boo Boo woonde ook een tijdje in St.Louis, deze belevenissen kun je volgen in het nummer ‘St. Louis Woman’. Mede door zijn vriendelijkheid, zijn liefde voor de blues en zijn immens enthousiasme “live on stage” heb ik al geruime tijd waardering en sympathie voor Boo Boo. Wie volgt? August 29, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - Name Of The Game Mississippi-born, Saint Louis based singer, harmonica player and sometimes (but not on this album) drummer Boo Boo Davis has recorded several albums for Black & Tan, and this set, recorded in Holland, presents elements from its predecessors, which have all had distinctive characters of their own. As the notes point out, Boo Boo “belongs to one of the last generations of musicians that write and play the blues based on first hand experience of a hard life in the Mississippi Delta”. Certainly Boo Boo has a big voice reminiscent of Howling Wolf, and there are some raw blues numbers on this set, owing something to the likes of Wolf and Jimmy Reed as reinterpreted by a down-home juke-joint band. But BooBoo also lives for today and there can be soul stylings in his music – try the (relatively) mellow ‘Why You Wanna Do It’ for a good example. Then again, BooBoo is canny enough to realise that the blues does need to change, if it and its audience are not to die of stagnation, and as this set was recorded without a bass guitar – besides BooBoo there’s just guitarist Jan Mittendoorp and drummer John Gerritse – there is a tendency to go for the tough rock influenced sound of the likes of young up-and-coming blues popularisers such as The White Stripes or The Black Keys, with some furious guitar work. Nonetheless, though purists may be less than keen, BooBoo’s own sound is not compromised. As a result, this set presents a rounded portrait of an artist with deep roots and a contemporary sensibility. ----- Norman Darwen August 28, 2008 from Bob Davis @ Soul Patrol: "The Black & Tan Record Label is one of my favorite labels. Some of you may recall me talking quite a bit about them a few years ago. They have a tremendous track record in coming up with compelling artists that produce Blues music, that is steeped in the tradition, but that is also relevant to the modern world. More specifically to the modern world of Black folks and in choosing to take that direction, they seem to be diametrically opposed to the rest of the Blues establishment. Of course, that makes them friends of mine :-) Of course to make matters even more interesting, we have a "Blues label", based in Europe that has a greater feel for modern day Black America, than do American Blues labels and they use their music to make a statement about it. Does it surprise you that the most progressive Blues label, the one that is most in touch with modern day Black America is headquartered in Denmark and whose CEO speaks broken English ? Maybe it shouldn't. We live in a world in 2008, where both the best golfer and the leading presidential candidate are "multi-ethnic Black Americans", that the mass media accuses of being "out of touch with the common man." And of course the most popular R&B artist in the world is a young white girl from England, who looks like she just crawled out of a coffin." P.S. Oui James Davis, au timbre de voix transcendant et profond, nous reviens avec Name Of the Game. Nouvel e nregistrement, nouvelle formule. Ce fils d'un sharecropper, avait lors d'une précédente tournée, eu une folle l'idée : " Et si on jouait sans bassiste ". L'idée ŕ germée dans la tčte de son producteur et guitariste Jan Mittendorp, et lors de la derničre tournée de printemps, nos protagonistes ont testé l'idée d'un accompagnement minimaliste. Devant le succčs public du trio, ce concept redonnant un coté plus authentique ŕ leur blues, ils ont décidé de graver dans la cire. Pour la circonstance, Jan Mittendorp, guitariste inspiré s'est assuré les services du batteur percussionniste John Gerritse. C'est ce contenu, qui en treize plages s'écoule nonchalamment sur ma platine. Contenu qui colle ici parfaitement ŕ l'image que l'on se fait du Mississippi Blues. Une tranche de vécu raconté musicalement par James" Boo Boo " Davis, multi- instrumentiste au bagage impressionnant, qui fut entre autre musicien d'un club de St Louis pendant 18 ans, et qui son plus jeune âge était sideman derričre Albert King, Ike Turner ou Chuck Berry. Le vieux bonhomme déclame ici, de sa voix caverneuse et rauque, un blues ŕ la texture dense instantané d'une époque pas facile. Un blues sans concession au tempo tribal, et ŕ la rythmique répétitive et appuyée, que le trio colore de petits artifices sonores. Les riffs volcaniques de la guitare baryton de Jan. sont la cerise sur le gâteau. Associé ŕ l'harmonica rugueux utilisé avec parcimonie, elle donne un coté sauvage ŕ cette débauche de sonorités hypnotiques et terriennes. " St Louis Blues " ou " Lonely All by Myself " qui doivent lui rappelez sa jeunesse sont des perles. Tout comme : " Dirty Dog", " I'm So Tired " ou encore le lancinant " I'm comin Home ", lŕ guy , tu as vraiment les dents du fond qui baigne dedans ! Boo Boo qui, quand il ne joue pas passe son temps avec ses chiens et ŕ la pčche, nous immerge au cśur du Delta, et nous livre aprčs " Drew Mississipi " une de ses galettes les plus brutes, qui est certainement une de ces meilleures. Né au milieu des ouvriers mais aussi des nombreux musiciens qui fréquentaient la région de Drew, Boo Boo Davis a fréquenté les John Lee Hooker et autres Elmore James que son pčre, agriculteur et musicien, accompagnait réguličrement et c'est en commençant ŕ jouer de l'harmonica et ŕ chanter dans les églises dčs l'âge de cinq ans qu'il fit ses premičres armes avant d'attraper une guitare ŕ l'adolescence et de rejoindre le reste de la famille dans The Lard Can Band pour sa majorité. Immigré ŕ Saint Louis pour y profiter de l'apogée du blues, Davis restera fidčle au Sud et puisera sa force dans une philosophie trčs personnelle qui le pousse ŕ extérioriser ses soucis au travers de sa musique. Armé d'un nouvel album enregistré en compagnie de Jan Mittendorp aux guitares et John Gerritse aux percussions, le chanteur et harmoniciste nous présente la musique qu'il est bien décidé ŕ porter sur les routes d'Europe plus de sept années aprčs sa derničre tournée sur le vieux continent ! Parfois lancinant, parfois survolté, le blues de Boo Boo Davis se montre riche et varié et s'appuie sur des structures trčs élaborées pour faire passer des émotions sincčres qui prennent toute leur dimension sur des titres comme " Dirty Dog ", " Want Nobody Tell Me How To Live My Life ", " Who Stole The Body ", " Why You Wanna Do It " ou " Hot Foot ". Doug MacLeod - Dubb's Talkin Politician Blues August 18, 2008 BOO BOO DAVIS - NAME OF THE GAME Boo Boo Davis was born and raised in Drew, Mississippi in the heart of Delta. Charley Patton stayed in the area for many years and several legendary performers spent time there, so there are plenty of influences to be absorbed by musicians growing up there. Boo Boo's father, Sylvester Davis played with John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Robert Pete Williams, and these and other musicians rehearsed at their house. At the age of five Boo Boo was playing the harmonica and singing in church with his mother. By 13 he was playing guitar, and by 18 he was playing out with his father and older brothers under the name of The Lard Can Band and travelling all throughout the Delta. In the early 60s he moved to St Louis but he remained a southerner at heart. He never learned to read and write, but he found ways to deal with modern society enough that he has toured Europe playing his blues. Name Of The Game (Black & Tan Records) is BooBoo’s fifth CD, and his previous one, Drew, Mississippi, was listed with the 10 best blues records of 2006 by MOJO Magazine. This is one of those albums that grabs hold of you the minute you start to listen – all sorts of influences percolate through (either intentionally or otherwise), like Hendrix, R.L.Burnside, Buddy Guy, but the music remains strictly Boo Boo Davis. The line-up is unusual in that there is no bass! Just Boo Boo on vocals and harmonica, with a guitarist and drummer – Jan Mittendorp and John Gerritse. It takes a while, though, to realize that there isn’t a bass in the band as the guitarist plays some nice bass riffs on his baritone guitar. The CD has 13 tracks in all, 12 of them written by Boo Boo Davis with a combination of other members of the band, the odd one out is a fantastic version of “St. Louis Woman,” the origins of which seem to be lost in time, but I can remember a version by Memphis Slim back in the 1950s. The opening track, “Dirty Dog,” is a good medium-tempo, foot tapper with wa-wa guitar, and it lays the groundwork for the rest of the album, which just gets better and better as it sails through the different tempos and influences. Track two, “I’m Coming Home” slows things way down, and features some good, moody, harp playing, before track three, “Stay From The Casino,” lifts the tempo up again to the level of track one. The songs move back and forth between slow and medium tempo until you reach a lovely boogie shuffle at track seven – “Who Stole The Booty,” a compulsive, driving rhythm that really makes you move, and one of the best tracks (for me) on the CD. MacLeod legt de muzikale lat in het algemeen hoog. Op zijn album slaagt hij erin zichzelf te overtreffen. Vanaf de eerste tonen weet hij te boeien met een stel uitstekende, persoonlijke songs. Hij maakt zijn reputatie van origineel beschouwer van het dagelijkse leven meer dan waar. De meeste songs brengt hij solo op de van hem gekende dynamische wijze. In een paar tracks wordt hij vakkundig ondersteund door bassist Jasper Mortier en percussionist Arthur Bont. Ze slagen erin om zonder opdringerig te zijn MacLeod's subtiele gitaarspel een uitgebalanceerde Hollandse basis te geven. De songs zijn op simpele wijze met een paar microfoons opgenomen en dat komt de directheid en intimiteit ten goede. Integer, doorleefd, sober en smaakvol zijn de sleutelwoorden bij dit sublieme album. Doug MacLeod is groots in zijn eenvoud. Het is te hopen dat we hier in Nederland nog lang van hem mogen genieten. August 12, 2008 It’s here! The parcel with BooBoo Davis’ new CD has reached me today, thank you! I just came back home and am listening to the record. I am impressed. The music is first class but it was the sound that grabbed me. It sounds… Hmm, not sure what to say. It’s old-school and modern at the same time. It reminds me of the Hound Dog Taylor’s trio but in a 21st century setting. One thing for sure, it’s raw and hard-hitting and that’s so refreshing as you don’t hear stuff like that too often today. Nothing is polished here but it’s all raw. Boo Boo is singing his heart out, his yelling and shouting, just like Howlin’ Wolf did back in the day and the setting for his voice – just guitar and drum set – is simply perfect. Nothing more is needed. After his previous, futuristic sounding album, this one is a great follow up. If this is the blues for the new millennium, I dig it! It shows BYTHER SMITH on one of european shows in 2005. Besides Smitty you'll find BOYD SMALL on drums, JASPER MORTIER on bass and yours truly on guitar. We did a few very success full European tours in 2004 and 2005. I worked with Smitty for over 10 years in Europe and I think he is one of the greatest and never received the respect and appreciation he deserved. What I learned from him (the hard way) is to leave out ANY note that is not essential to the song and the groove. The dynamic combination of his weathered, bluesy vocals and offsetting fretwork inventiveness (on a pair of guitars: his own National Delphi and a borrowed Stella twelve-string) are especially spellbinding on titles like the memory-laden, bottleneck-imbued ‘’I Respectfully Decline,’’ the coffeehouse philosophical ‘’Where You’ll Find Me’’ (great Zen-like lyrics), a great character-filled saga titled ‘’The Long Black Train’’ that hauntingly rings out in affinity with the most antediluvian Delta blues, and the bouncily optimistic ‘Coming Your Brand New Day.’ Anger and frustration are the order of the day in the uncasy ‘’Sheep Of A Different Color,’’ an astute commentary on the multifaceted ‘polarization of America, while MacLeod recalls his early days on Los Angeles’ 1960s ghetto blues scene – when he regularly sat in with legends such as Pee Wee Crayton, Charles Brown, Joe Turner and George ‘’Harmonica’’ Smith – on the chilling ‘’Horse With No Rider,’’ based on a backporch story Smith once related to him. Macleod’s ragged-but-right solo work-out on the anxious ‘’What You Got (Ain’t Necessarily What You Own)’’ along with the emotionally taut ‘’Long Time Road’’ are also noted. Fans of Richard Thompson, Dave ‘’Snaker’’ Ray or John Lee Hooker, for that matter, will find MacLeod well worth checking out. July 16, 2008 some information on our upcoming release:     CD B&T 033 / BOO BOO DAVIS / NAME OF THE GAME This is how Mississippi blues sounds in 2008. Boo Boo Davis is a survivor and belongs to one of the last generations of musicians that write and play the blues based on first hand experience of a hard life in the Mississippi Delta. He was born and raised in Drew, Mississippi where times were tough and everybody had to work the fields. Sharecroppers sang loudly to help pass the grueling hours of work and without a doubt Boo Boo developed his loud, bellowing voice based on the singing he heard in the fields as a young boy. In fact, that voice, through the years has demolished many amps and speaker cabinets. In the early sixties he went north to St Louis and was around during the heyday of the St Louis music scene (Albert King, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry and many others). Together with his brothers they were the weekend house band in Tabby's Red Room in East St Louis for eighteen years. Even though Boo Boo moved north to St. Louis, he will always be a southerner at heart. When he is at home (and not performing) his favorite pastimes are hunting with his dogs and fishing. During Boo Boo's childhood there was no time or money for him to go to school so he never learned to read and write. However that did not prevent him to travel all over the world. Following his guiding spirit (that he calls Dave) Boo Boo has found a way to deal with modern society. The blues helps him to keep his spirit high and survive day-to-day life. It deals with all the basic raw elements of life. Good times and bad times; plain and simple. All the music and extemporaneous sounds that you'll hear on this record are coming from Boo Boo's vocal chords and harmonica, John's drum kit or Jan's guitars. What started as a crazy idea after the tour with Boo Boo in October 2007 has turned out to be not too crazy at all. On the Spring Tour of 2008 they decided to leave out the bass and tour as a trio. The audiences loved it and were amazed all that sound was coming from just three pieces. John created a great drum kit (100% Radio King with real skin heads) around his 60+ years old 28 inch bass drum and Jan bought a baritone guitar and put very heavy strings on his regular guitar. These were the ingredients that produced this big authentic sound. Unlike many modern blues bands, Boo Boo and his band focus on the groove, the feel, and the basic truths found in the blues. Blues doesn't come any 'realer' then this.
